Two episodes into Hulu’s new anthology series Dimension 404, and the best description I can give is that it feels like a more adult/bigger budget version of the Goosebumps tv series. And I mean that in the most complimentary way, because I love the shit out of some Goosebumps, Are You Aftaid of the Dark and Eerie Indiana. These are fun little sci-fi/horror inspired vignettes and so far they’ve been pretty relevant as well. They aren’t done as seriously as the Twilight Zone, hence the Goosebumps comparison.
The second episode in particular is my favorite so far. “Cinethrax” was clearly written by horror fans, and stars Patton Oswalt as a cinephile reluctant to the millennial technology embraced by his teenage niece. If you consider yourself a horror fan, you’ll enjoy the nostalgic homage and little Easter eggs of episode two. It’s just campy enough to be fun, and relevant enough to be creepy. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and you shouldn’t either. Check it out. Back to binging I go.
Dimension 404 is now streaming on Hulu, new episodes on Tuesdays.
